The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X was the first commercially available cell phone, available for purchase in 1983 for $3,995. Talk time was around $1 per minute. Dr. Martin Cooper, inventor of the DynaTAC, made the first private cell phone call to his rival Joel Engel, head of research at Bell Labs.
